Spoons – Some of the Best Ice Cream Ever

Returning from a vacation, family visit and extremely long road trip, it has been hard for me to get back in to my regular routine.  On Saturday, we visited our local library and I checked out a book by Dawn O’Brien.  Dawn travels through various Southern states and visits historical restaurants.  She writes about her experiences and shares recipes from the restaurants.  The book I selected on Saturday was North Carolina’s Historic Restaurants.

As I started to write this post, I wasn’t feeling very inspired until I started browsing through the book and saw Spoon’s Ice Cream listed in Charlotte, NC.  When I graduated from school in 1968 and moved to Charlotte NC, I lived right around the corner from Spoon’s Ice Cream and I had forgotten about how good the ice cream was.  Whitney Spoon started making ice cream in 1929 and opened his Ice Cream Shop. The shop stayed about the same and was very casual.  They offered 38 flavors of ice cream and sherbert.  My favorites included Strawberry cheesecake and an orange coconut type flavor.

Spoon’s has closed now and as I read about it, I could remember the wonderful atmosphere and flavor of Spoons.  Imagine my surprise when I saw strawberry cheesecake ice cream as one of the recipes Dawn included in her book. That had to be my absolute favorite flavor of all the 38 offered by Spoons.

Spoons Ice Cream

As I read over the recipe, my mouth was watering and I know I am going to give these recipes a try for sure.  I think the recipe for the strawberry cheesecake ice cream is unusual because it doesn’t include cream cheese but I can tell you from experience that it is absolutely wonderful.  I also included a recipe for banana ice cream that looks as if it would be great for a party.

Well, I think my inspiration and motivation has returned and I am thankful that I was able to experience many different flavors at Spoons Ice Cream in Charlotte, NC.  Ice Cream.  Yum! Yum! Yum!  Thanks for stopping by.

My brother Steve McCuller and I worked for Mrs. Spoon from 1973 to 1977. Along with other neighborhood kids from the Elizabeth area we helped make the ice cream, cut ice cream sandwiches, and waited on customers. These were among the most memorable times of our childhood.

Showed this to my husband. He worked for MIss Spoon as a. Kid in early 70’s. His favorite was the orange coconut pineapple.
