Iredell County Cows and Fresh Baked Bread

The June issue of “Our State” magazine features cows and dairy farmers.  Many of the dairy farms in Iredell County are featured in the article and that is the neighboring county of where I live.  I have rode through the northern part of the county and the rolling hills with the barns and cows in view is beautiful.  Here is a picture of the cover of the magazine.

As I was reading the article, I remembered that I have a cookbook from the Oakdale Club, a homemakers extension club in the Statesville area of Iredell County.  I wanted to feature recipes from the cookbook and that is how I decided on sharing bread recipes.  I have been pondering the idea of baking fresh whole wheat bread.  I have tried to make it many times without success and I think that is going to be something I attempt soon.  The recipes I am sharing are contributed by Marie Bell.  As I read her recipes and her note about making bread for so long, I thought that would be a great place to start.

The first recipe is for plain yeast rolls.  Is there anything that smells better than fresh baked yeast rolls.  ?

The  following recipes are for whole wheat bread submitted by Debbie Shorts and Marie Bell.  I love to make fresh bread and feel the combination of the yeast with the other ingredients as I knead the bread.  I will let you know how my bread turns out when I give it a try.  One thing I know for sure is I will try this when I have plenty of time and can enjoy the experience.

The article in the magazine renewed some of my childhood memories of the milkman, milk in glass bottles and Biltmore Dairy in Asheville.  I may take a road trip soon and ride through the beautiful countryside of Iredell County and see the farms, farmers and cows that make such wonderful dairy products.

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. I have always wanted to make bread but I have a totally irrational fear of yeast. I’m not afraid of anything – except yeast. Okay, and mice.

    • I am with you on being afraid of Mice. EEEEKKKKKK!!! My irrational fear is of all things, stainless steel appliances and I know it is a sensory thing. Touching them absolutely creeps me out. So you can have a fear of yeast and I can have a fear of stainless steel. We are still OK!!
