Stone Mountain Georgia

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Dale and I traveled to Stone Mountain, Georgia.  It is located outside of Atlanta and has always been on my bucket list.  The mountain is granite and their is a confederate Memorial Carving that depicts three Southern heroes of the Civil War:  Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.  It is an amazing site and it is hard to believe how massive it is because you are so far away from the carving itself.

The figures measure 90 by 190 feet, surrounded by a carved surface that is larger than a football field – the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world.  The sculpture is located 400 feet from the ground and recessed into the mountain 42 feet.  The deepest point is at Lee’s elbow (the central figure) and it is recessed into the mountains surface 12 feet.

We rode a tram to the top of the mountain.  There is a great view of the Atlanta area from the top of the mountain and you do have the option of hiking up the mountain if you prefer.

It is amazing to walk around the top of the mountain and to see trees growing out of the granite.

There is a laser show and fireworks in the evening and we had reserved seating on the terrace of the memorial museum.  It was a great show and there was a salute to the troops in honor of Memorial Day.

I am sharing a link with more information about the Park.  There are great activities within the park and it could be a fun place for any and all members of the family.  http://www.stonemountainpark.com/
